Ok so I bought a new Dell D830 laptop with the full intention of running it primarily as a Linux pc with Windows in a virtual machine. Early searching showed that most of the components would work out of the box as long as I was using a new version of Linux. So far, I've had two issues. First, the installer DVD for Fedora doesn't load the ide-cd driver so the DVD drive can't be used for the entire install. Not a big deal. I used a boot cd, chose the network install and installed from a different pc on my network.
I knew I would need to enable the livna repository to get the nvidia graphics adapter working (but at 1920x1080, it sure is pretty). I installed the 64 bit version Fedora 8. I was shocked that the Intel 4965 (agn) wifi adapter worked right out of the box. Even the volume buttons worked. The "wifi catcher" button is not recognized, but I really don't know that I want/need that enabled.
Another somewhat annoying thing was the tap to click feature on the touchpad. I've used tap-to-click before, but this is so damn sensitive out of the box, that I had to find a way to disable it. That involved editing the /etc/Xll/xorg.conf file and adding a section for the synaptic touchpad.
I haven't tested suspend or hibernation yet, but it looks like it should just work too.
